Hafez is a student of English literature, who is
translating the story of Zahhak, the Dragon King,
from the great Persian epic, The Book of Kings.
Through his tranzlashun, Hafez’s imaginative
moves construct an unrelaxing binary life for him
in which he deals with Zahhak and Ayatollah,
unreal and real persons.

‘The nomad’, they call him, the uncanny being
who appears to Prince Zahhak, tempts him with
a plot and remakes his life by castrating
his sense of self.

Prince Zahhak, the son of Merdas, King of Arabia,
comes from a supremely dramatic age. The
undeveloped Arab who makes extreme choices
which lead to disparaging events in his life.

Later, we find Hafez as a paperless, dislocated person
in a foreign culture. The American poetry like Allen
Ginsberg’s vastly sways Hafez’s studentship while he
is befuddled by an inherently unbending regime he
escapes from. He is infrequently relaxed as his working-
class family is wedged by an all-impairing and warring
sanction crisis. We see him equally disjointed in his marriage
rife with both identity fluster and his tranzlashun of Zahhak.

Hafez’s brother is a student of German Language.
The news of Basij's attempt to put him on a two
year academic probation forces Arash to leave
his struggling family behind for another country.

The serpents turned their necks, and red
ghastly teeth protruded from the jaws.
When the mouths closed, those fanged teeth were still bared.
Golden sparkling scribbled lines were shining
on the arched and s-shaped trunks.

Zahhak’s life passes from episode to episode.
He becomes the otherworldly and devilish king
of Arabia, part human, part serpent. He occupies
and colonizes Persia, creating a culture of fear.

Ayatollah whose eyes are invisible dank cells!
Ayatollah whose wives manufacture raw tyranny!
Ayatollah whose pipelines, Russian parasite towers
and antennae neuter the cities! Ayatollah whose
love is incomputable barrels of fear! Ayatollah
whose soul is ballistic missiles and drones!
Ayatollah whose black turban is the specter of
Zahhak! Ayatollah whose life is a cloud of capitals!”

The immortal Iranian warrior who appears in
Zahhak’s dream, and defeats Zahhak by his
buffalo‐headed mace. With one firm sharp rap,
he pins the Shah’s head and toe as one, yokes his
snakes, and imprisons the beast on Mount Damāvand.
Zahhak will remain there in chains until the end
of the world. Fereydun is identified in Islamic
sources with such biblical and koranic figures as
Noah, Abraham, and Nimrod.

forces with Fereydun and helps him wrest the
kingdom of fear from Zahhak.
